About Croatia:
The Republic of Croatia, known as CROATIA, is a small country with a population of 3,872,000 situated in South East and Central Europe, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. It became a member of the European Union on January 1st 2013 and adopted the Euro as its currency on July 1st 2023. It stands majestically on the Adriatic Sea and is bordered by 5 countries: Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. Its largest city and capital is Zagreb. Other important cities include Split, Rijeka and Osijek. Croatia’s 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) are ideal for art retreats as the country’s beauty is truly breathtaking!
DUBROVNIK is where we have decided to base our painting holiday (also for drawing artists) because of its obvious charm and ‘paintability’!
CROATIA PAINTING HOLIDAY typical schedule:
DAY 1: 6.00 PM welcome at the hotel’s reception where your tutor will give out materials and equipment provided for the week. Dinner in Dubrovnik as a group. Let the fun begin!
DAY 2: Painting demo for beginners at watercolours from 10.00 AM to noon. On this art retreat to Croatia, you will learn the basic techniques to get you started such as how to do a flat wash, graded wash, wet in wet, lifting colour, and dry brushing. Participants who are not beginners or who are intermediate or above and using another medium will be able to test out their materials. The demo will be followed by lunch in Dubrovnik old town. Painting session in the old town from about 2.00 to 5.00 PM, followed by some free time to have a drink, walk around, shop etc. Dinner with wine at a local restaurant in the evening.
Dubrovnik is situated in the Southern part of Croatia, and in our humble opinion, one of the prettiest areas of the country. Dubrovnik is the most prominent tourist destination of Croatia, and one of its most beautiful maritime cities. Its delightful fortified Old Town and port will sweep you away by its beauty.
DAY 3: 11.00 AM sightseeing followed by lunch at noon. Afternoon painting session from 2.00 to 5.00 PM at the overly charming Dubrovnik port. Your paints will itch to jump out of the box! Free time. Dinner with wine at a local restaurant.
The city has a population of 41,500 people and was added to the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO in 1979 for its outstanding architecture and fortified old town. Known as Ragusa in the 7th century, it became a prosperous city based on maritime trade. The city became notable for its wealth and development during the 15th and 16th century. It was also known as a hub for Croatian literature at that time.
DAY 4: Buffet breakfast at the hotel followed by a free morning. Lunch in the old town. Afternoon painting session from 2.00 to 5.00 PM on the heights of the old town (a few steps and there we are). Free time. Dinner with wine at a local restaurant.
Under the reign of Napoleon, Dubrovnik was occupied by the French Empire forces. Ragusa abolished, Dubrovnik incorporated the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and later the Illyrian Provinces of France. In the 19th and 20th century, Dubrovnik was part of the Austrian empire and later became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In 1991, under the Croatian War of Independence, Dubrovnik was taken over by the People’s Army of Yugoslavia and suffered damage because of shelling. After reparation, it rightfully emerged or re-emerged as a top destination of the Mediterranean. It is also a popular filming location, where parts of Game of Thrones were filmed on Lokrum island.
